Wheelchair lifts are a very important component for such a vehicle as a mobile medical van. It exists to provide physical access into the mobile medical facility regardless of physical abilities, or health conditions of patients.
Typically, the interior of a van can be accessed through either the side door or back entrance. Converting a cargo or passenger van, like a Freightliner Sprinter, Mercedes Sprinter, or a Ford Transit into a mobile healthcare facility, depending on the chosen solar power options, and the actual equipment pertinent to the given medical specialty, it’s common to have the side entrance be the only point of access to the interior of the mobile clinic, while the backdoor provides access to the mechanical room of the unit but not the interior of the clinic. The main reason for those decisions has to do with the size and the amount of gear involved in running a health clinic inside of a van that takes a considerable amount of space and for safety reasons is isolated from the main area of the clinic space, considerations that don’t apply in a typical personal-use only handicapped van or handicap-accessible vehicles.
While a Sprinter or Transit based mobile medical van can theoretically have either a rear or side wheelchair lift installed, the particularities of everything else that is needed in terms of equipment to actually produce a working mobile medical clinic in a van will determine if you want a wheelchair lift in that particular vehicle, if it shall be installed using the side door or the back door entrance to the vehicle, or if a particular van model is even suitable or capable of receiving an ADA compliant wheelchair lift given everything else that needs to go in.
